What Equipment Is Used for Site Preparation?

If you're planning a home build, a new shop, or any kind of construction project on raw land, one question comes up pretty fast: what does all that equipment actually do? You see a crew roll in with a bulldozer, an excavator, and a skid steer, and it's easy to assume they're all just "moving dirt." They're not. Each piece of site preparation equipment has a specific job, and using the wrong machine — or skipping one entirely — is one of the most common reasons new builds run into problems down the road.

The Equipment Lineup: What Shows Up and Why
Bulldozers
The bulldozer is usually the first machine on site, and for good reason. It's built for one thing: raw pushing power. On wooded or overgrown land, a dozer knocks down trees, pushes root balls out of the way, and shoves large amounts of material across the site quickly.
In East Texas — especially on heavily wooded acreage across Walker County and surrounding areas — you're often dealing with dense pines and hardwoods before you can even think about grading. A dozer handles that initial clearing pass faster than anything else.
That said, dozers are not precise. They're not meant to be. You use a dozer to rough out the site and move mass quantities of material. The finishing work comes later.
Excavators
The excavator is the workhorse for anything that involves digging down rather than pushing across. It's the machine that digs footings, removes stumps below grade, cuts drainage swales, and handles the deeper earthwork that a dozer simply can't reach.
On a typical residential site prep job, an excavator will handle:
- Stump removal below the surface (where stump grinding finishes what the dozer started)
- Trenching for utilities
- Cutting the building pad down to the correct elevation
- Shaping drainage channels
Excavators come in a range of sizes. A mini excavator works well in tight spots or on smaller lots. A full-size machine is what you need when you're moving serious material or working on larger lot clearing projects.
Motor Graders
Once the bulk of the material has been moved, a grader takes over. This is the long machine with the angled blade underneath — the one that makes a surface genuinely flat rather than just "close enough."
Graders are used for both rough grading and final grade work, depending on where you are in the project. Rough grading establishes the overall slope and drainage plan. Final grading smooths the surface to the tolerances required for a slab, a road base, or whatever comes next.
Good grading work is not just about aesthetics. If the grade is wrong, water pools where it shouldn't, slabs crack, and you end up paying to fix it twice. Graders are how you get it right.
Compactors and Rollers
Moving dirt and grading it is only part of the equation. Fill material that hasn't been compacted properly will settle — sometimes dramatically — after construction begins. That's why compaction equipment is a non-negotiable part of subgrade preparation.
There are a few types used in site prep:
- Vibratory plate compactors: used for smaller areas or confined spaces
- Sheepsfoot rollers: designed specifically for clay-heavy soils (extremely common in East Texas)
- Smooth drum rollers: used on granular fill and for final surface passes
The sheepsfoot roller is worth calling out specifically. Clay soil — which covers a large portion of sites in Grimes County and across the Brazos River bottomlands — doesn't compact well with a smooth drum. The "feet" on a sheepsfoot roller penetrate and knead the clay, achieving real density rather than just surface hardness.
Skid Steers and Track Loaders
A skid steer is the utility player of the equipment lineup. It's compact, highly maneuverable, and can swap attachments to do a dozen different jobs. On a site prep project, you'll see it used for:
- Cleaning up debris piles after clearing

Not every site prep project uses every piece of equipment listed above. What gets deployed depends on:
Site conditions. A heavily wooded 5-acre lot in San Jacinto County needs dozer work and stump removal before anything else. An open pasture that just needs grading might skip straight to the grader and compactor.
Soil type. Clay-heavy soils need sheepsfoot compaction. Sandy or loamy soils compact differently. This is one reason you can't just copy what a contractor did on a different project in a different county.
What's being built. Building pad preparation for a metal building has different tolerances than a poured concrete home foundation. A concrete slab demands tighter grading than a gravel parking area.
Access and terrain. Tight lots or steep terrain often require mini equipment. Wider-open sites can run full-size machines more efficiently.

Run a grader over an uncleared site and you'll just push roots and debris into the subgrade. Compact fill that hasn't been properly graded and you'll lock in a surface that sheds water the wrong direction. Skip stump removal and compact over the top, and you'll have voids developing under your pad as those buried organics decompose.
The right sequence for most residential projects looks roughly like this:
- Land clearing (dozer, mulcher, or both depending on vegetation)
- Stump and root removal
- Rough grading and cut/fill balancing
- Utility rough-ins (trenching with excavator)
- Fill placement and lift-by-lift compaction
- Final grading to design elevations

What About Forestry Mulchers?
Worth a separate mention. Forestry mulching attachments — run on a skid steer or track loader — have changed how a lot of land clearing gets done in East Texas. Instead of cutting, piling, and burning (or hauling), a mulcher grinds trees and brush into fine mulch on the spot.
For the right site, it's faster and cleaner than traditional dozer clearing. The mulch layer can also help with erosion control during construction. It's not the right call everywhere — large trees and heavy timber still need dozer power — but for brush-heavy land up to about 8-10 inches in trunk diameter, a mulcher is hard to beat.
